The information in this file provides KDE with instructions to start the applica-
tion, display it as an icon on your KDE Desktop, or display a description of the
application (perhaps in several languages).
In order to add an application to the KDE main menu, the Autostart folder on
your Desktop, or the Panel, the application must have a KDE Link file. Although
you can create these files in a text editor by following the example above, the
easier method is to use the dialog boxes provided by KDE.
NOTE: KDE Link files don’t contain applications or other
system resources; they simply provide facts about it for KDE
to use in locating and working with the application, device,
or other resource.
KDE Link files can be identified by the file extension .kdelnk. They can be cre-
ated in the directory where they are needed (for example, in the Autostart folder),
or they can be created in any directory and then moved to the location where you
need them.
To create a KDE Link file for an application:
1.
Open a file manager window in KDE.
The easiest way to do this is to choose Home Directory on the main menu.
2.
Choose File|New|Application in the file manager window.
A small dialog box appears where you can enter a name for the KDE Link
file.
Don’t change the .kdelnk file extension shown.
NOTE: You can also right-click on the KDE Desktop and
choose New|Application to create a KDE Link directly on the
KDE Desktop.
3.
Choose OK to close the dialog box.
A new program icon appears in the file manager window. It includes the
name you entered and a default icon. Then a Properties window for the
new file appears.
